New publication: Three qualitative sustainability assessments in three countries comparing the re-use of brownfield land for nettle fiber production with alternative land management scenarios

The increasing demand for bio-based fibres as substitutes for synthetic materials raises concerns about land-use competition with food production. One proposed solution is the cultivation of non-food fibre crops on marginal or brownfield land. This study evaluates the sustainability of cultivating stinging nettle (Urtica dioica L.) for fibre production under poplar (Populus spp.) as a multifunctional land management strategy on brownfield and industrially impacted sites. . Updated guidance for the investigation of land potentially affected by contamination has been published, reinforcing the UKā€™s framework for safe, sustainable land development. BS 10175:2026 will supersede BS 10175:2011 which will be withdrawn.

Towards Harmonized Soil Monitoring in the EU: An Inventory of Existing International and European Standards

The JRC has recently published a report on Existing International and European Standards related to the soil strategy.

The present technical report provides an inventory of 574 soil-related standards from international and European standard bodies including the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN), as well as standards from other well-recognised international institutions including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-GLOSOLAN) and demonstrates the need for harmonisation of soil-related standards to ensure consistency and comparability of soil data and to support effective soil management and protection efforts.
